The Ontake Distillery was launched by Nishi Shuzo, a company whose history goes way back to 1845. These days, Nishi Shuzo is best known for its line of sweet potato shochu under the brand name Houzan. The company is also behind Tenshino Yuuwaku, one of TWSC 2020’s Superior Gold winners in the shochu division.

The name “Ontake” collectively refers to the three tallest peaks of Sakurajima: Kitadake, Nakadake, and Minamidake.

Niigata Kameda Distillery

The Shizuoka distillery, established in 2017 by Gaia Flow, a notable importer of whisky brands like Blackladder, Swedish Mackmyra, and Asta Morris, made a significant move by acquiring the distilling equipment previously employed by the renowned Karuizawa distillery, which ceased operations in 2011. This acquisition generated excitement among whisky enthusiasts, who anticipate the revival of exceptional whisky production.
 
While the purchased equipment includes three Karuizawa stills, only one can be utilized due to the age of the other two. Nevertheless, all three stills will be exhibited at the new distillery as a tribute to Karuizawa’s legacy. Despite the inability to utilize all the acquired stills, the prospect of Shizuoka producing whisky akin to Karuizawa’s famed quality promises a delightful experience for whisky aficionados.
