The Laphroaig 10-year-old cask strength edition first launched in the late ’90s, and earlier releases of these terrific Islay malt are rather collectible today. Among them is the ‘red stripe’ edition from around 2004, bottled at cask strength and aptly named “Straight from the Wood,” paving the way for the annual batched editions we recognize today. The distillery’s rugged coastal character shines on the palate, while lightly charred oak casks lend a subtly sweet vanilla nuttiness that balances Laphroaig’s bold peat smoke and medicinal punch.
